No. 01. The Proper Method

Visual essay4 min readPublished 2026-07-24Current

A specimen photographed in the archive becomes a plate drawn in one ink. The essay follows that translation and asks what survives it, and why the first Field Objects are line work rather than photographs.

The specimen. Gill macro from the archive, the frame Plate No. 01 was drawn from.

A specimen, then a plate

A botanical monograph does not photograph its subject and print the photograph. It draws the subject, and the drawing is the record: the gills that matter are the ones the illustrator decided mattered. Plate No. 01 is drawn from the archive's own gill macro. What survives the translation is structure — the fan under the cap, the footing on the table, the ruled margin that says this was studied rather than found.

Why not the photograph

A photograph printed on cloth arrives as a rectangle carrying its own background. It sits over the garment instead of on it. That is the clearest signal an object came off a queue rather than out of a studio, and it is the reason the first capsule is line work in one ink.

What these objects are for

A shirt is not an argument. The maxim is an instruction to the person wearing it, set the way a caption is set — small, numbered, and beneath the thing it describes. Nothing in this study is for sale yet; the objects are recorded here so the record exists before the transaction does.

The plates

What the essay shows.

Each plate is described in words further down, so nothing here lives only in the image.

In words

Everything shown, described.

The essay is its own text. Each plate carries the long description below, and the whole page prints without the images.

The specimen, described

A single cap seen from beneath, filling the frame. Pale gills radiate from a central stem like the ribs of a fan, closely spaced, each one a thin translucent blade catching light along its edge. The colour runs from cream at the centre to a dusky grey at the margin. The ground behind it is dark and out of focus.

Plate No. 01, described

A rectangular plate in one slate ink on paper. A thin ruled margin sits inside the edge. In the upper two-thirds a circular roundel contains a line drawing of the same gilled cap, reduced to structure: the fan of gills, the footing of the stem, no shading. Beneath the roundel, set in wide capitals at the scale of a museum label, the words DO IT PROPERLY. A small plate number sits at the lower margin.

The chest mark, described

A small horizontal lockup. At the left, three short vertical rules of slightly different heights, the house shelf mark. To their right, the maxim in small capitals, and under it a plate number in the same hand.
